Hot Scanners Spark a Resolution Revolution

Before the digital revolution passes you by, get digitized. The UMAX Astra 1200S color flatbed scanner digitizes your photos with Bit-Enhancement Technology to incorporate more colors and tones for smoother gradation. The single pass, 30-bit charge-coupled device (CCD) scanner delivers a 600x1200-dots-per-inch maximum hardware resolution and a 9600x9600dpi maximum interpolated software resolution. The unit scans letter-sized images at a rate of 74 seconds for color and 17 seconds for black and white.

Measuring 4.1 by 12.9 by 21.1 inches, the scanner weighs 12.8 pounds and uses a cold cathode lamp as its lighting source.

UMAX offers Presto PageManager software (a folder-based document-management and OCR program) with either Adobe PhotoDeluxe or Photoshop 4.0.

Agfa SnapScan 600, SnapScan 600 Art Line and StudioStar

Good things come in threes. Agfa delivers a trio of 30-bit color flatbed desktop scanners: the SnapScan 600, the SnapScan 600 Art Line and the StudioStar. All three scanners have optical resolutions of 600x1200 pixels per inch (4800ppi interpolated) with a SCSI-2 interface. The units scan color images at a rate of 4 seconds in Speed mode and 10 seconds in Quality mode. They perform gray-scale scanning in less than 3 seconds. All models weigh 12.3 pounds and measure 5.5 by 14.75 by 20.9 inches.

The SnapScan 600 Art Line bundles four software packages from MetaCreations, while the StudioStar includes these plus Adobe Photoshop LE (full version optional)

Microtek ScanMaker V300

The Microtek ScanMaker V300 flatbed scanner delivers 300x600dpi image resolution and produces up to 4800dpi resolutions with software enhancement. Its Zero-Reflection Design prevents stray light beams from affecting image qual-ity, and a cold-cathode lamp eliminates warm-up wait time. The V300 scans gray-scale images in 10 seconds and color images in 31 seconds. The unit measures 3.2 by 11.5 by 17.3 inches and weighs 11 pounds.

Visioneer PaperPort and Ulead iPhoto Plus are bundled with the scanner.

Olympus ES-10

The Olympus ES-10 film scanner features the Olympus Super Latitude scanning system for high-quality imaging, a single-pass CCD and a single-point fluorescent light source. The ES-10 scans 35mm film at resolutions of up to 2400x1600dpi. Using either 35mm or Advanced Photo System film, the unit can directly scan a slide or negative in color or black and white. Since it has its own passthrough printer port and can connect to any PC, the scanner and printer can share the same printer port.

Panasonic KV-SS50EX and KV-SS55EX

Bring digital imaging to the desktop with Panasonic's EX scanner series. The Panasonic KV-SS50EX and KV-SS55EX feature 52 page-per-minute scanning at 300dpi; 40ppm at 200dpi; and 27ppm at 150dpi. Using Panasonic Image Enhancement software, the scanners can set white levels, reduce image distortion and automatically separate photography from text in scanned images. While the KV-SS50EX scans single-sided documents, the KV-SS55EX functions as a single-pass duplex (two-sided) unit at 3 seconds per sheet.

Both models measure 15.3 by 22.3 by 17.7 inches and weigh 31 pounds. They have a one-million-page duty cycle and can process all types of paper from business cards to legal-size documents. Both units carry a one-year limited warranty with a next-day exchange program for both in- and out-of-warranty repairs.
